Stand-up paddleboarding has evolved from ancient practical watercraft traditions into a global water sport and lifestyle. Its roots can be traced to early cultures that used standing paddling for fishing, transport, and rescue, including South American Totora reed boats. The modern form of SUP was revived in mid-20th century Hawaii through Waikiki’s Beach Boys and later shaped by pioneers such as Duke Kahanamoku, John Zapotocky, Laird Hamilton, and Dave Kalama. With advances in board design, inflatable SUP technology, and the rise of international competitions such as the APP World Tour and ISA World SUP and Paddleboard Championship, paddleboarding has become both a professional sport and an accessible outdoor activity enjoyed worldwide.
