Witches on Water: A Halloween SUP Costume Party

How to bring a little Halloween magic to your next paddleboarding adventure.

Three PFD-wearing paddlers in practical witch costumes on ATPROSS boards during a daylight autumn Halloween paddle

Halloween is just around the corner!

The season of spooky decorations, creative costumes, glowing pumpkins, and all things mysterious is almost here.

Every year, we celebrate Halloween in familiar ways: carving pumpkins, visiting haunted houses, hosting costume parties, going trick-or-treating, or spending the evening watching scary movies with friends.

They're all great traditions. But if you're someone who loves spending time outdoors, why not try something a little different this year?

How about a Halloween costume party... with paddleboards?

Imagine a group of witches, skeletons, and pumpkin-headed adventurers gathering by a beautiful lake, showing off their costumes, decorating their paddleboards, and heading out together for a relaxed daytime paddle.

Sounds like a pretty unforgettable Halloween, right?

Welcome to Witches on Water — a Halloween SUP Costume Party!

Let's see how to make it happen!

01 · BEFORE LAUNCH

Start the Magic on Shore: A Halloween Costume Gathering

Before anyone touches the water, let the Halloween festivities begin on land!

Choose a lakeside gathering spot with enough space for everyone to meet, get dressed, and decorate their boards.

Set up a little Halloween corner with pumpkins, spiderweb decorations, witch hats, and a spooky photo backdrop. Add some music, hot chocolate, apple cider, and a few seasonal snacks, and you've got yourself a cozy outdoor Halloween party.

Encourage everyone to arrive in costume. Whether they want to be a mysterious witch, a friendly ghost, a skeleton, or a walking pumpkin, anything goes!

This is also the perfect opportunity to take group photos and admire everyone's creativity.

Party tip: Save elaborate accessories for the shore party. When it's time to paddle, switch to something more practical.

02 · ON THE WATER

Time for the Halloween SUP Parade!

Now comes the most exciting part of the day!

Gather your friends for a relaxed 30–45-minute daytime paddle on a calm, sheltered lake. There's no need for racing or complicated challenges. Just enjoy paddling together, taking a few photos, and admiring everyone's Halloween-inspired outfits.

You can even add small, securely attached Halloween decorations to your paddleboards for an extra festive touch.

Picture a group of colorful paddleboards gliding across the lake, with witches, pumpkins, and skeletons enjoying the autumn scenery. That's definitely a Halloween memory worth capturing!

04 · SAFETY FIRST

Keep the Costumes Spooky, Not the Paddle!

Halloween is all about a little fright, but the water shouldn't be part of the scare.

Fall weather can be unpredictable, and even a calm-looking lake can present risks, especially as air and water temperatures begin to drop.

Before heading out, here are a few important things to keep in mind:

Wear your life jacket. A properly fitted PFD should be worn throughout the paddle, regardless of your costume.

Choose paddle-friendly outfits. Avoid long capes, heavy fabrics, loose accessories, and masks that block your vision or movement. Your costume should never cover, restrict, or interfere with your PFD.

Decorate safely. Keep decorations lightweight and secure. Never block the standing area, handles, inflation valve, or leash attachment points. Just remember that decorations should never interfere with your ability to paddle, balance, or get back onto your board.

Check the conditions. Choose calm, near-shore waters, and check the weather, wind, and water temperature. Wear appropriate cold-water protection if needed.

Stick to daylight. Plan to finish well before sunset, paddle with a buddy, and have an experienced person lead the group.

Make sure everyone is comfortable on a paddleboard and knows the route and emergency plan. If conditions aren't suitable, simply enjoy the Halloween celebration on shore instead.

The golden rule: Go wild with your costume on land, but keep it simple, comfortable, and safe on the water.

After all, you want your paddleboard to look spooky — not become a spooky experience to paddle.

05 · FINAL CHECK

Costume-Ready, Water-Ready: Your Halloween SUP Checklist

Before your group sets off, make sure everyone is ready.

  • ✓ The weather, wind, and water temperature are suitable.
  • ✓ The route stays in calm water, close to shore, during daylight.
  • ✓ Everyone has an appropriate, properly fitted PFD and wears it on the water.
  • ✓ Costumes allow clear vision, free movement, and safe swimming.
  • ✓ Board decorations are secure and don't block important equipment.
  • ✓ Paddlers have suitable safety gear and know the group plan.
  • ✓ Everyone has a buddy, and someone is tracking who is on the water.
  • ✓ Warm clothing, towels, and dry clothes are ready back on shore.
  • ✓ Everyone knows when and where to return.

And one last thing: don't forget to bring your Halloween spirit!

Make This Halloween a Little Different

Halloween doesn't always have to mean crowded parties, haunted houses, or staying indoors watching horror movies.

Sometimes, all it takes is a few friends, a little creativity, some Halloween decorations, and a beautiful place to paddle.

Whether you're dressing up as a witch, decorating your board with tiny pumpkins, or simply joining the celebration from shore, a Halloween SUP costume party is a wonderful way to bring people together and enjoy the outdoors.

At ATPROSS, we believe some of the best moments on the water are the ones shared with friends, full of laughter and a little adventure.

So this Halloween, why not try something different?

Bring the costumes. Bring the paddleboards. Bring your favorite people.

And let the Halloween magic begin — safely, of course!

Happy Halloween from ATPROSS!
